Mission and Vision
Koinonia Farm was established in 1942 in Americus, GA, by Clarence and Florence Jordan as a place dedicated to service and radical hospitality. Rooted in principles of racial equality, pacifism, and economic sharing, Koinonia became a revolutionary community where believers shared resources and followed the model of early Christian communities. These ideals sparked resistance, and the farm faced violence and efforts to drive them out during the 1950s. However, the residents stood firm, responding with prayer, nonviolent resistance, and a renewed commitment to their way of life.
As time passed, Koinonia Farm began addressing the housing crisis in their area, evolving into a "housing ministry" dedicated to building quality, affordable homes. This mission grew into Habitat for Humanity International under the leadership of Millard and Linda Fuller, who joined Koinonia after leaving their fast-paced life in New York. Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International is now a global organization working across all 50 U.S. states and over 70 countries, welcoming people of all faiths and backgrounds.
Henderson Habitat for Humanity was established in 1990 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping hardworking, low-income families achieve homeownership through a "hand up, not a hand out" approach. Originally located in the Big Rivers building downtown, Henderson Habitat later moved to Klutey Park Plaza Drive, where it opened the city’s first Habitat ReStore. In 2013, the organization relocated next to the Dodge Store on Green Street, expanding the ReStore to offer even more bargains and grow its mission. During this period, Henderson Habitat completed home builds #50 - #59 and held a special Blitz Build for the Paul family in 2015.
In 2016, Henderson Habitat needed to find a new location and relocated to 132 Carlisle Street near the 2nd Street overpass. Soon after, we had the chance to purchase our own building right across the road, which allowed us to expand our ReStore, add office space to grow our team, and create a construction shop where volunteers could work on materials regardless of weather. Thanks to a generous donation from the Fred Lauver family, made in memory of their daughter Denise Lauver, we were also able to build a boardroom for meetings and family education classes.
Since moving into our "forever home" in 2018 at 1030 Third St, we've continued to grow, serving more families each year and providing the tri-state area with a wonderful place to donate and shop for affordable home goods and building materials. Every purchase supports our mission, with proceeds directly funding local home builds, keeping resources within the community to help build more homes year after year.
Today, Henderson Habitat is well known for its dedication to providing safe, decent, and affordable housing, powered by the unwavering support of our volunteers and community.

We work toward this vision by creating access to safe, affordable housing and by bringing people together to build, revitalize, restore, and educate our community. Using shelter as a foundation, we seek to provide a wide range of safe, decent, and affordable housing solutions, building strength, stability, and self-reliance for families in our community.

Habitat for Humanity of Henderson, KY, embraces an open-door policy: anyone who believes in the importance of decent, affordable housing is invited to join our efforts, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views, or any other differences that might typically divide us. We welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and serve those in need of housing without regard to race or religion.
Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates uphold a strict non-proselytizing policy. We do not require adherence to or conversion to any faith as a condition of receiving assistance, nor do we work with any entity or individual that insists on proselytizing as part of their partnership with us. Our mission is to provide housing solutions without religious expectations, solely to support those in need and to foster a welcoming community for all.
