What is Habitat for Humanity?
  • An ecumenical, Christian faith-based, world-wide housing ministry.
  • A non-profit, 501-C-3 organization of mostly volunteers eliminating and replacing substandard housing by building safe, basic and decent shelter in partnership with people at the lower end of the income scale.
  • An affordable housing provider for those who cannot otherwise acquire conventional home mortgage financing, improving neighborhoods and communities one house at a time.

Begun in the early 1990s by the Ministerial Association with the offer of two building lots by the City Commission, Henderson’s Habitat for Humanity affiliate continues to offer an opportunity to households who have no other hope of home ownership. Habitat is not a governmental agency. It receives no United Way funds. Construction of Habitat homes is dictated by the volunteer contributions of time, expertise and resources of individuals, churches, civic groups and businesses for whom poverty, substandard living conditions are morally unacceptable and decent, basic shelter is the right of every human being. All contributions to Habitat are tax deductible and help the effort to provide a hand up—not a hand out—to people in need.

Applications for Habitat housing are made available to and received from households:
residing in or employed in Henderson County, KY, for at least one year,
in January, February and March of each year,
at Habitat’s office at 325 South Green Street
.

The approved applicant for Habitat housing will:
  • be involved in Habitat’s ministry, volunteering a minimum 300 hours in Habitat’s ReStore or on the construction of someone else’s Habitat house prior to the construction of their own;
  • be required to pay $600 as a down payment prior to the occupancy of their new home;
  • be required to participate in workshops on household finances and home maintenance;
  • purchase their newly completed house from Habitat for the costs of lot acquisition, building materials and title transfer, making monthly no-interest mortgage payments “recycled” by Habitat to help build additional houses.

Habitat houses are sold without a profit margin, built mostly by volunteers, meet and exceed local building codes and are the property of the homeowner. Principal-only mortgages may be paid in advance without penalty.
